Chinese New Year, Dragons and Learning to Recycle

Over the past few weeks at pre-school, we have been learning about birds and how they find food in the winter. We made our own bird hide to use in the treehouse and watched the birds with the pre-school binoculars as well as binoculars that the children made themselves.

The children have enjoyed making bird food to put in the bird feeders or use over pine cones. They mixed the birdseed, rice and lots of over items with some fat before placing in the bird feeders. Some children weren’t keen on the texture of the fat and decided to use spoons instead of their fingers.

We celebrated Chinese New Year and used the school hall to dance to Chinese music using our dragon head. We made our own dragon for a frieze in the playroom and used our counting skills to count coins into a lucky red packet. We looked at how Chinese numbers are written and how they are different from how we write our numbers. We listened to a story about Nian and then acted the story out in small groups. During our Chinese restaurant role play, we tried very hard to use chopsticks!

This week we have been looking at recycling and we decorated the bins in pre-school so we know which bin to put our rubbish in, especially at lunchtime.

This week we will be looking at healthy eating and we will make a fruit salad.  We will also be concentrating on numbers and dinosaurs (we will make our own dinosaur number book) and junk modelling.

We are continuing to go to the Primary School hall for dancing, ring and action games which the children are really enjoying. On the days we don’t access the hall we are using our Sticky Kids music in the playroom as well as getting into small groups for musical instruments, Kid Talk and joining in with repetitive phrases in stories such as letters and sounds.

We are continuing with Hedgehog Club, (our before and after school offering) please contact Louise on 01565 652340 or email if you are interested in making a permanent or ad hoc booking.

Emails have recently been sent out asking for session requirements for the summer term, which is after Easter. A form asking for your requirements for our holiday club, which will run during the Easter holiday, May half term and over the summer has also been sent out. Please email Louise with any requirements as soon as possible or return your form to pre-school.
